EJL Wireless Research Reports Global Enterprise Small Cells Hit Record Shipments in 2016

Enterprise BTS-based small cells capture 92% share

Total shipments reach 1 million units in 2016

Salem, NH, June 30, 2017:  Global enterprise in-building wireless (IBW) BTS/controller-based small cell shipments increased by 150% in 2016 to record unit volumes, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research titled “Global In-Building Wireless BTS/Controller-based Small Cells Market Analysis and Forecast, 2017-2021 1st Edition.” “Strong market demand in 2016 allowed the market to reach the 1 million units level for the first time,” says founder and President, Earl Lum. EJL Wireless Research defines BTS/controller-based small cells as products specifically designed for enterprise in-building wireless market verticals for buildings in the 100k-500k sq.ft. size.

EJL Wireless Research predicts that 2017 shipment volumes will increase by 20% with continued growth through 2021. Controller-based small cell shipments are expected to gain market share over the next five years as solutions from suppliers such as CommScope and SpiderCloud are qualified into mobile operators. EJL Wireless Research forecasts that small cell demand will also be driven by environmentally friendly building standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) which prevent wireless signals from the outdoor macrocell network to penetrate into buildings.

“Huawei Technologies’ LampSite product was the leader in unit shipments with Ericsson Radio Dot moving up to second overall in 2016. The largest region for shipments was China and we expect that China will continue to be the market driver over the next five years. Because the market in China does not depend on mobile operator network sharing, distributed antenna systems (DAS) will continue to struggle while small cells will become the dominant in-building wireless solution in China,” says Lum.
